Act Five Scene One

from Evocations (album) by The Goths

/

about

Act Five Scene One dates from late-1990 and was in the same category as Frankenstein, retelling a well-known literary episode, in this instance the Gravediggers scene in Shakespeare's Hamlet. This was a bit of irreverence, some black humor as well aimed at what is a very iconic speech in literary history and could be viewed as an insightful reinterpretation of the scene from the gravediggers’ point of view, a parody being played out by the gravediggers.

lyrics

The clowns are in the churchyard
They’re going two by two
For the skull of another jester is
Performing there at two
The Prince of Denmark is
Conducting a minor symphony and
Will attempt the execution of a
Grand soliloquy

The players have all entered
Now with mattocks and with spades as
For the comfort of their guest a
Pit of clay has to be made
For this fellow who was once a
Most gifted orator has been
Lying in the earth for three and
Twenty years or more

Alas, poor Yorrick, I knew him

He could have been a lawyer with
His quillets and tenures but
What does all that matter to
The grave he has been lured
Instead he spilt the wine as
The jester of the court and
The Prince of Denmark knows
Another lesson has been taught

Alas, poor Yorrick, I knew him, Horatio!
