Apocalypse

from Evocations (album) by The Goths

/

about

Apocalypse was written at the end of the 1990 period and had a completely different sound and feel to anything else by The Goths, very stripped-down, almost 'unplugged', which suited the song's thematic content. It sounded like the Apocalypse was just around the corner, the world already falling apart, and as musicians The Goths are trying to document it by grabbing whatever instruments are close to hand. The track was influenced by medieval depictions of the Apocalypse and was jammed a few times to work out how the lyrics would fit the music prior to performance and eventual recording. Guitars plugged direct to multi-track gave it its ‘unpluggedness’.

lyrics

Women flee the town
The beast is on the prowl
Riders on their black steeds are
Chewing on their spears
The sun, a blazing red orb is
Setting in the east

Apocalypse

The end of the world is here
