Don't Want To Die

from Evocations (album) by The Goths

/

about

Don't Want To Die dates from late 1989 and is reminiscent of the Old West genre tale. With a stream of consciousness narrative mode, it pretty much wore its heart on its sleeve. It's a song about someone who makes a mistake and is trying to escape the consequences, yet who’s on what can only be described as a sort of reluctant journey towards an inevitable demise. Don't Want To Die could be seen in different ways, a flashback, or a kind of allegory in the sense that one thing we share in common is life is ultimately a journey towards death.

lyrics

Going down to the cemetery
I don’t seem to feel too good
There’s a body hanging from a tree
My heart feels like it’s made of wood

(A-ha ha)

And I don’t want to die
Just for telling a lie
No I don’t want to die

There’s a gang close on my tail
I can’t seem to shake them loose
They want to put me in the jail
So I can face the hangman’s noose

(A-no no)

And I don’t want to die
Just for telling a lie
No I don’t want to die

Being persecuted for a simple crime
Shed my tears and paid that price
That’s not enough, I've got to do time
For something which I didn’t think twice about

(No I didn’t think twice)

And I don’t want to die
Just for telling a lie
No I don’t want to die
