Doppelganger

from Lost Art (album) by The Goths

/

about

Doppelganger was written in 1988 from an early guitar riff and first verse that were tucked away for some time until other verses could finally be added, including one in German. The manner in which Doppelganger came together was ad hoc, yet it was the title's four-syllable beat that drove both words and music, with a final choice of lyrics plucked at random from conversations and mental digressions. Doppelganger would seem to reference appearances, especially those of a form that would usually appear strange or scary. Appearances are an important part of the scene to which The Goths belong, in appearing conspicuously dark, mysterious, antiquated and homogeneous as a group. In that sense, Doppelganger might be seen to reference the need to fit into The Goths scene as a reaction, seemingly, to the world's more negative aspects. The zaniness factor is lifted with wild guitar work, perfect keyboards and thumping bass.

lyrics

Doppelganger, doppelganger, doppelganger, please
I’m dying on my feet I tell ya living on my knees
It’s hard enough without you, it’s hard enough oh please
Doppelganger, doppelganger, frequency rare
The reason I can’t see you is because you’re never there
The reason you’re not there is cos you’re... air
Doppelganger, doppelganger, armor class five
The ethnographic ratio keeps you alive
You know you’ve never traveled and you’ve never socialized
Doppelganger, doppelganger see you on TV
I see you in the forests in the Gothic cemetery
You’re playing hide and seek with your personality
Doppelganger, doppelganger, bitte siehst mich sterben
auf mein fuß du siehst mich sterben an den kniem
Ich kann nicht ohne dich und ich kann nicht mit dir bitte
Doppelganger, doppelganger, fly away home
Your house is on fire and your kids are alone
It’s enough to make me sick, it’s enough to make me groan
