about

Gloom was one of the final efforts by The Goths in the 90's and is pure atmospherics. It's atmospherics literally, featuring atmospheric sound effects and instrumental music. Dark, somber bass lightened by solo harpsichord followed by 'tutti' passages performed with guitar, bass and drums, the idea of some sort of light at the end of the tunnel. A device in early music, or medieval music, known as the Picardy third, sometimes called Picardie’s third or the French ‘tierce de picardie’, its full classical name, is also used. A major chord at the end of a piece of music in a minor key. This was used in early music in the 16th and 17th centuries as a way to provide relief or resolution after prolonged periods of melancholy or tense and disturbed music. Gloom made it to record but was never played live. It's a spontaneous recording and one that would have been thought of as the best contender for its title.
