Mother of Zorba

from Creature Feature (album) by The Goths

/

about

Mother of Zorba dates from 1990 and delves headlong into the disciplines of coldness and cruelty as well as conditions of the self-defeating personality. It explores the overly-mothered scenario, using punishment to correct disobedience and how the laying down of law manifests in culture and literature, lifting the lid for instance on such novels as 'Venus in Furs' by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Mother of Zorba combines a tautology of attitudes for imposed strictness with situations whereby others are whipped into shape by a firm hand.

lyrics

I know a big black mama who’s very good at grammar
Has a son called Zorba who’s handy with a hammer
Her name is Juliet and she wields a wicked whip
Wearing scarlet velvet boots, this lady’s very hip

Kneeling at the altar, got a muzzle for a halter
Salvation from the mother, its coming will not falter
Now this little worm who is squirming at her feet
Knows what it’s like to turn and to go into the street

She’s reaching in the cupboard, it’s a serious scene
Wants to play a game called 'the beggar and the queen'
There’s a knock at the door, just let your mother in
Get down on your knees to pray for your foul sin

Bowing down to mama, salvation is a hammer
Putting on the muzzle so she can teach some grammar
Her name is Juliet and she wields a wicked whip
Wearing scarlet velvet boots, this lady’s very hip
