Neck Romancer

from Creature Feature (album) by The Goths

/

about

Neck Romancer dates from the end of 1990 and is another type of literary summary, pretty much taken from 'The Return of the Sorcerer', a horror short story by Clark Ashton Smith first published in 'Strange Tales' pulp magazine in September, 1931. Neck Romancer starts with an apprentice's attempt to raise the dead, a conjuration that ends in a great deal of carnage. The theme is found in many works of art and traditions from 'Der Zauberlehrling', a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe written in 1797, later popularized in 1940's Fantasia and the Paul Dukas symphonic poem based on it, to 'Frankenstein', itself subject of The Goths 1990 same-named single. Fantastic instrumentation and production abounds.

lyrics

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is raising the dead tonight
The corpse in the coffin is lifting its head to fright
He’s an all-night Neck Romancer
From down in the basement comes a piercing scream
The Sorcerer’s creation had a throaty meal
He wants to try the taste of some exotic flesh,
Wants to take a journey to a foreign land
Collar up your neck cos he’s the Neck Romancer
Resuscitated Sorcerer’s taste-buds are tingling
On the floor of the basement their blood is mingling
