about

Ruins was first performed in 1991. Three things, mainly, help to give Ruins a bit of a kick. First is the rhythm of the song, pretty much dictated by the rap-like flow of the lyrics. Secondly the bass sound and last was the rolling guitar riff that augments the rhythm and gives it more dynamism. Ruins came at the end of The Goths most productive spell when capturing mood and dynamism was a lot more within reach. It was almost a retelling of their earlier track Citadel, with which several parallels can be drawn, two people trying to find their way through what seems like the same environment, yet not sure whether they're looking for something or escaping from something, perhaps some cataclysmic event, while time is constantly wearing the material world away. In the process, the sense of space is also challenged. Both characters have entered this space, whatever it is or used to be, from their own specific trajectories. Ruins is anything and everything that dissipates and falls apart and goes down a more explicit path, that of the image of the skeleton of the smoldering old cathedral or temple.

lyrics

It’s a clear dark night and a
Crisp white moon provides a
Silky backdrop to the ruins

Structure built to last
All time is crumbling in
Despair it lies in ruins

Ruins in the ruins

Pale young Princess northern
Blood has lost all sense of
Space and time in the ruins

Dark haired knight from southern
Lands can’t seem to find his
Mortal way through the ruins

Ruins in the ruins
