Smorgasbord

Smorgasbord dates from the latter part of 1990. The Goths had been developing a new approach to songwriting by this stage and Smorgasbord was one where a specific concept for the timing, that is, the short 2/4 interludes between verses, had actually been brought in. That little timing change turbo-charged the rhythm through which more ingenuity was injected into the music, rather than the focus being on the lyrics. Smorgasbord is essentially a musical conga-line through a freak show with a kind of side-show alley carnival atmosphere. The emphasis here is on the phase of uncontrolled productivity The Goths went through after having been performing live.

All the monsters will be there

For a feast of flesh and bone

Frankenstein will be wearing a tutu
He can do the pirouette
And the zombie has his dinner suit
He can be the star

I want to go to the smorgasbord
I want to see my friends
But Ma won’t let me out the door
She says it’ll be the end

If I don’t go to the smorgasbord,
I don’t know what I’ll do
Perhaps I’ll have to kill Mama,
So she can come along too

For entree there’ll be blood of baby,
Served up nice and piping hot
Or perhaps you’d like to Hail Mary
And put her on the spot.

Main course will be vestal virgin,
Dressed in white and undefiled
And of course she will be garnished,
With parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme

Tea. We’ll have some cake and
Cake ourselves in blood
We’ll carrion till sunrise takes
Away the night’s dark hood
