about

Werther dates from early 1990 and is based loosely on 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It began as a somewhat slow-motion, swamp blues. The Cure had put out the Disintegration album whose title alone inspired the documenting of stages in Werther’s drifting demise. The opening, 'Get out of your grave, your mother told you to behave' set in motion ideas, some of which finally stuck. 'If you don’t have a body, you can’t behave', or words to that effect, were given at a university lecture attended by Percy Blakeney, and strayed in as a sort of a warning to Werther. Percy Blakeney: "It's saying, 'listen, remember, you need a body to progress along the spiritual path. After you die, you can’t use your body any more to decide your fate'".

lyrics

Werther, Werther, get out of your grave
Your mother told you to behave

Werther, Werther, he’s going to hurt her
Who’s going to alert her to Werther?

Werther, Werther, he won’t desert her
He wants to take it further, does Werther

Werther, Werther, aaaaghhhhhhhh!
She’s got him for murder

Werther, Werther, if you don’t have a
Body you can’t behave
