Midnight

from Evocations (album) by The Goths

/

about

Midnight was written early in 1990 and is essentially the narrative of a dream within a dream. The narrator has nodded off, dreaming about flying to some fanciful place. Yet rather than waking from it, the dreaming continues through a false awakening. The lyrics play on the famous Shakespearean line, 'to be or not to be'. Faces seen by the narrator, after the false awakening, are a dead giveaway the awakening itself was also in fact nothing but a dream. Midnight depicts the inadvertent revelation as the title signifies change from one day to another. It clocks in at 2:50 yet in that time an entire world is explored. The lovely layered introduction leads into a wonderfully orchestrated world of rolling guitars, alternating rhythms and exquisite bass.

lyrics

Midnight broke and I had something
She wrote so I went into a dream

I wanted to reply, in fact I wanted
To fly to that castle in the sky

I wanted to scream some long
Lost dream of a Midnight Queen

Midnight stroke was the time
I awoke and I went into the street

And all the faces that I see,
They make Midnight seem to me
To be or not to be

I wanted to scream some Midnight
Dream of a long lost Queen
I wanted to reply

I wanted to fly
