Quest

from Lost Art (album) by The Goths

/

about

Quest dates from the end of 1989 and contains a patchwork of fantasy elements with some random, seemingly disconnected, historical references. It concerns a person, seemingly some sort of knight errant, setting out on some kind of journey to achieve something. But we never know exactly who is setting out. Even though it's in the first person, the narrative is obviously not the singer's per se and we don't really know exactly what the goal is supposed to be. The individual wants to find the ‘Almagest’, but why. Instead, Quest meanders on with the idea that ultimately it's the journey itself that is more important, not the result. This was the first of The Goths songs to have quite a long gestation period compared to most of The Goths other efforts, gradually teased from a chord sequence and structure that took more to sort out than some others.

lyrics

I’m on the Quest, cos I’m the best,
I’m on the Quest cos I’m better than the rest,
Going on the Quest, looking for Ptolemy’s Almagest
Going on the Quest

Sick of a rest, headed East then West
I drifted out to sea, drinking herbal tea
Put to the test to look for Almagest
Found Kublai Khan, he was in the pleasure barn

In the Dragon’s lair, where nobody dare
I was trapped in a mire, bitten by a Vampire
Put to the test to look for Almagest
Found Bonaparte, he had lost his art

Trapped in a cage, by a vicious Sage
After grisly slaughter ravaged by his daughter
Put to the test to look for Almagest
Found Joan of Arc, but she had missed her mark
