Smashed

from Evocations (album) by The Goths

about

Smashed, dating from late 1990, is an ironic introspection on shattered illusions. It has a fair deal of dream-like imagery with metaphor and simile, beginning with a 'boat on a river', a figment of self-belief, being able to cope with things and just let things be until illusions are dashed as uncontrolled uncertainties take their toll. The 'licker in your liver' verse describes the niggling discomforts in attempting to overcome tendencies or dependencies when such attempts can be crushed by the slightest impulse. The snake of betrayal appears finally, signifying the revelation of shattered illusions.

lyrics

Like a boat on a river,
only one way it can go
and that boat on a river,
it's gonna make it
wanna throw,
overflow

Smashed!

Or the licker in your liver,
is gonna take you down the river,
gonna slice you up a sliver
you can take it to the throne
and you won’t be alone

Smashed!

Like a snake I’m gonna slither,
gonna make your lipser quiver,
gonna take you down the river
you can make it overflow
